James Comey reportedly keeps in his home office the place card from his fateful 2017 dinner at the White House, where President Donald Trump said he’d “need” and “expect” the former FBI director’s loyalty.
During an interview with the New York Times, Comey pointed to the place card, which has “Director Comey” written in calligraphy and now sits on a shelf at Comey’s Virginia home next to family photos and books.
At the Jan. 27, 2017, dinner, which was written about both in the Mueller report and Comey’s own book, “A Higher Loyalty,” the president told Comey "I need loyalty. I expect loyalty.”
The following May 9, Trump fired Comey, and later that month, Comey leaked a memo that revealed Trump had asked him to end the FBI investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, triggering the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.
Also on the home-office shelf is a book by Nate Silver, the political data analyzer who thinks Comey’s October 2016 letter about the Hillary Clinton email investigation probably handed Trump the election, and a page from a quote-of-the-day calendar: “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”
“It reminds me so much of the FBI,” Comey told the Times about the quote.
