Amid talk of a virtual Democratic National Convention, already delayed until Aug. 17, political strategist James Carville is "dubious" one will even be needed, because voters have spoken and Joe Biden is the choice.
"The Democrats have already picked their nominee," Carville told Sunday's "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y. of Biden's large primary delegate lead.
"There's not going to be a convention of any kind," he added, "most people are dubious, as am I."
Carville cited pollster estimations Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., or anyone, has just a 1% change of unseating Biden, adding the country must put its focus first on stopping the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
"A lot's going to have to happen to him if he's going to lose a selection," Carville said as host John Catsimatidis suggested only a serious illness could threaten Biden's chances.
"If he just stands there and does nothing, he's going to win."
As for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, amid rumors he might be a darkhorse candidate if not a vice presidential pick, Carville believes the next presidential cycle is far more likely.
"In 2024, he's definitely going to be on everybody's list of potential strong candidates, but he's had this opportunity," Carville said. "He is an aggressive guy. He's an experienced guy. He understands the media."
Biden has said publicly he is weighing a host of women candidates to be his 2020 running mate. Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer – a fierce antagonist of President Donald Trump – have been bandied about. Also, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, who was the last to suspend her primary campaign.
