Poll: Mattis Has 35 Percent Approval Rating

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis has the highest approval rating of the members of President Donald Trump's Cabinet, based on a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday.

The poll's results:

  • 35 percent approve of Mattis; 19 percent disapprove.
  • 34 percent approve of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson; 32 percent disapprove of Carson.
  • 34 percent approve of United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley; 20 percent disapprove of Haley.
  • 32 percent approve of White House Chief of Staff John Kelly; 24 percent disapprove.
  • 28 percent approve of Mike Pompeo, director of the Central Intelligence Agency and secretary of state nominee, while 24 percent disapprove.
  • 23 percent approve of Betsy DeVos, secretary of education; 38 percent disapprove.
  • 22 percent approve of Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, with 25 percent disapprove.
  • 21 percent approve of Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao and Sonny Perdue, secretary of agriculture; Both also had an 18 percent disapproval rate.
  • 20 percent approve of Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt, and Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney — Pruitt has the highest disapproval rate among the three with 25 percent, with Shulkin at 23 percent disapproval and Mulvaney at 22 percent.
  • 19 percent approve of Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross; 19 percent disapprove of Ross.
  • 18 percent approve of Energy Secretary Rick Perry; 27 percent disapprove.
  • 18 percent approve of Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar; 20 percent disapprove.
  • 17 percent approve of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke; 19 percent disapprove.

DeVos has the highest disapproval rating among the Cabinet members. The top five disapproval ratings are:

  • 38 percent disapprove of DeVos.
  • 32 percent disapprove of Carson.
  • 27 percent disapprove of Perry.
  • 25 percent disapprove of Mnuchin and Pruitt.
  • 24 percent disapprove of Kelly and Pompeo.

Rex Tillerson, the now-former secretary of state, had a 30 percent approval rating, which would have put him at fifth most popular. He had a 27 percent disapproval rating, which would have tied him at third-highest disapproval.

The poll, conducted March 15-19, surveyed 1,994 registered voters, and had a 2 percentage point margin of error, the poll report said.
