Fmr Detroit Police Chief Craig Joins Michigan Senate Race

By    |   Tuesday, 03 October 2023 07:46 AM EDT

Retired Detroit Police Chief James Craig announced Tuesday his candidacy in Michigan as a Republican for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who announced earlier this year that she will not seek reelection.

"I'm not running to represent the right or the left," Craig said in his announcement. "I'm running to represent everyday Michiganders tired of a government not working for them and a D.C. establishment more worried about maintaining power than creating real change."

Craig added that has spent his "entire career in public service, defending men and women in cities, and I'm not going to stand by while Michigan is defenseless in D.C."

Craig served as Detroit police chief from 2013-2021 after being in law enforcement for over three decades and became well known nationally for maintaining order in Detroit during the Black Lives Matter riots in the city.

Other candidates running in the GOP primary, being held on Aug. 6, 2024, are U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, Michael Hoover, Nikki Snyder, and J.D. Wilson, according to Ballotpedia.

Democrat primary candidates are U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, Nasser Beydoun, Zack Burns, Hill Harper, Leslie Love, and Pamela Pugh.

Douglas Marsh is running as a Green Party candidate.
