Democrat strategist James Carville Monday warned his fellow Democrats against nominating Sen. Bernie Sanders for the 2020 presidential nomination, claiming that there is a "certain part of the Democratic Party that wants us to be a cult."

"I'm not interested in being a cult," Carville, who first gained national attention when he was the lead strategist for former President Bill Clinton's campaign, told MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "I'm not interested in being in a cult. I'm 75 years old. I'm not a very culty person."

Carville in recent days has spoken out against picking Sanders, who fought a bitter battle with ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the 2016 presidential nomination. On Monday, he warned that his party "has got to know who it is and who its constituents are."

"The African-American vote is central," Carville said. "(They are) looking for somebody that can come in and not just excite them, but talk about things that really matter to them in everyday life. They're not interested in socialism and revolution and all that stuff you hear."

And if Democrats lose that vote, and votes from states such as Texas and North Carolina, they will be "the British Labor Party and be out on some theoretical leftwing 'la la land,'" said Carville, who is backing Sen. Michael Bennet's campaign.

"He's able to connect with people," said Carville "We'd pick up 55 Senate seats. I want a big win, but let's see what happens in New Hampshire."

He said his biggest fear, though, is that Trump gets elected, as "I don't think we can make it, I really don't."

"Look at the way people in this country are talking to each other," Carville said. "Look at our relationships around the world. Look at the fact that the budget deficit is soaring and 3.5% unemployment. The country can't continue like this and it has to have an alternative."
