Rep. Speier: Franken 'Doesn't Have the Right' to Be in Congress

Democratic Congresswoman Jackie Speier on Thursday said that the number of accusers mounting against Sen. Al Franken is likely "just the tip of the iceberg" and he should resign.

"It is a pattern of behavior that cannot be tolerated," Rep. Speier said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "Whenever you have someone who infringes on another person, as he has done, repeatedly, he does not have the right, frankly, to be a member of the Congress of the United States.

Despite Franken's forceful denial of the latest anonymous accuser, Speier says the math indicates that it really doesn't matter; Franken "now has eight accusers," yet she cited a statistic that 70 percent of victims never report it.

"In this case, because the numbers have just been rolling in, and there is a pattern here that is truly unacceptable. … In all likelihood, that's probably just the tip of the iceberg," Speier, D-Calif., told the MSNBC panel.

When asked why not let Franken stay on through the Senate ethics probe that he volunteered to go through, Speier cited the avalanche of Democratic senators who called for the Minnesota Democrat's resignation Wednesday.

"He certainly can pursue that. There are members asking for him to resign. He will make that decision himself," Speier said.

Franken has said he will make an announcement Thursday, but his office denied that a decision had been reached to resign.
