Senate Democrats up for re-election, six so far, are demanding President Joe Biden freeze $6 billion in Iranian funds following Hamas' brazen attack on Israel last Saturday.
Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Jon Tester of Montana, Jacky Rosen of Nevada, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Sherrod Brown of Ohio have called on Biden to freeze the assets while the U.S. measures whether Iran played a direct role in the attacks.
In August, details were made public of an agreement in which Biden approved to unfreeze $6 billion in Iranian assets in South Korea in exchange for five U.S. hostages held by Tehran. At the same time, five Iranians held by the United States were allowed to leave.
Washington, under former President Donald Trump, had placed a ban on Iran's oil exports and sanctions on its banking sector in 2019.
