Sen. Paul: Mueller Investigation a Widening 'Witch Hunt'

(Fox News' "America's Newsroom")

FBI special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into matters not related to connections between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia are a "witch hunt" that could go on for years and cost millions of dollars, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said Wednesday.

"They're not doing anything with Russia," Paul told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "They're trying to look at people's taxes from a long time ago that have nothing to do with President Trump."

Former campaign manager Paul Manafort and deputy Rick Gates pleaded not guilty Monday to a multi-count indictment charging them with several counts of laundering money and defrauding the U.S. government, but the documents did not include any mention of Trump or Russian collusion.

Meanwhile, the growing investigation is a "distraction" for Congress, Paul said, and he does not believe the president had any collusion going on with Russia.

"The rest of it is just a witch hunt in order to transfer blame from Hillary Clinton's poor candidacy to blame the Russians," Paul said. "They will drag this on forever."

And with Mueller's probe being given millions of dollars and an unlimited ability to go after anybody, "you'll find that people are going to be prosecuted for stuff that has nothing to do with the original mandate of the prosecutor," Paul said.

Further, he said, if there is no evidence of collusion, Mueller's investigation should be stopped.
