Two years after he gave up a safe House seat to lose a Republican primary for U.S. Senator from Indiana — and hours after he tested positive for COVID-19 — stalwart conservative Todd Rokita roared back Tuesday night to win the election for attorney general of the Hoosier State.

With nearly half the vote counted, Rokita was rolling up 60% of the vote over “progressive” Democrat and former Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapful.

Earlier this year, Rokita deposed incumbent Attorney General Curtis Hill at the state GOP convention. Hill had been under press attack for allegations he had groped women at a party.

In a campaign of polar opposites, Rokita campaigned as a strong “law and order” candidate and took conservative stands on abortion and gun ownership. As a secretary of state, he was the author of the state’s Voter ID law and oversaw its defense in court challenges right up to the Supreme Court.
