House GOP Poised to Divert Funding Away From at-Risk Incumbents
Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock

The financial futures of about 45 House Republican at-risk incumbents are in the hands of party strategists who are in the process of deciding who should continue to receive funding and who they should cut off, Politico reports.

With just so many millions to go around, it comes down to a shrewd calculation of who has a viable chance of winning in November and cutting off those who don't.

"This is the time of year when tough decisions have to be made," Ken Spain, a longtime former top National Republican Congressional Committee staffer, told Politico. "There are likely going to be a number of unhappy Republican members of Congress in the coming weeks."

Incumbents likely to lose funding from the party are ones who have run sluggish campaigns and fundraising efforts or are just otherwise not performing well in their districts.

Three examples, according to Politico:

  • Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock
  • Pennsylvania Rep. Keith Rothfus
  • Iowa Rep. Rod Blum

"The NRCC isn’t going to be able to help those who haven’t helped themselves," former GOP Rep. Phil English told Politico. "These are very Darwinian decisions. It means selection of the fittest."
