Pelosi Slams GOP Immigration Bill as 'Compromise With the Devil'

By    |   Thursday, 21 June 2018 01:42 PM EDT

House minority leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday dismissed the Republican-led immigration bill as anything but a compromise, adding that it's only a "compromise with the devil," not with Democrats, The Hill reported.

House Republicans are expected to vote on two competing immigration bills later Thursday, one of them being touted as a compromise bill, given that it offers a path to citizenship for DACA recipients while also providing for President Donald Trump's wall and other border security measures.

Pelosi isn't the only one who doesn't like either bill, neither do Republicans; both measures are expected to fail.

House Republicans "talk, and sometimes you all repeat it, that it’s a compromise. But it is not a compromise. It may be a compromise with the devil, but it’s not a compromise with the Democrats," Pelosi told reporters.

"Their bills are anti-family, perpetuate child detention, undermine existing protections [and] cut off many people who have been waiting lawfully to enter the country," Pelosi said.

Trump on Tuesday met with House Republicans about the bills, professing "1,000 percent support for both of them," confusing GOP lawmakers even more.

While GOP leadership has been pushing its members to vote for the compromise bill, conservatives are against it because it's viewed as amnesty for the hundreds of thousands of illegals already in the country.

However, moderate Republicans will not vote for the more conservative measure, sponsored by Rep. Bob Goodlatte.

Complicating efforts by Republicans even more is that a day after their meeting with Trump, who saw separating families as a winning strategy for Republicans in November, he signed an executive order halting the practice.

Pelosi and Democrats were hardly pacified.

"Whether they’re incarcerated with their parents or not, they should not be incarcerated," Pelosi said.
