House leaders on both sides of the aisle have dozens of fundraising stops lined up during the five-week summer recess in an effort to bolster their parties' chances in November, Politico reports.
Their own political futures are at stake, too.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy wants to ascend to House Speaker, as does Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Speaker Paul Ryan is on a legacy run. All of that hinges on the voters in November, and that all starts with raising tens of millions, which begins Thursday, the first day of recess.
To that end, according to Politico:
- McCarthy has 30 events lined up in 12 states.
- Majority Whip Steve Scalise also has 30 fundraisers lined up.
- Pelosi is poised for events in 13 states.
- Minority Whip Steny Hoyer has events lined up with more than 20 candidates.
Ryan is rallying with Wisconsin candidates before embarking on a four-state tour. He also has events to support his Congressional Leadership Fund PAC, Politico reports.
Democrats were buoyed by second quarter fundraising results that showed they outraised Republicans in 56 key toss-up districts across the country. However, Republicans in many of those still owned bigger war chests overall.
“If you allow yourself to be outraised, then you are inviting trouble,” Chris LaCivita, a Republican consultant, told Politico. “In a midterm election with your party in power, trouble generally equates to defeat."
