The number one issue in Rhode Island is jobs and incumbent Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., is stifling job growth by his continued support of regulations and taxes, GOP senate candidate Barry Hinckley tells Newsmax.TV.
Hinckley, who brings to the campaign some 20 years of entrepreneurial experience and is the founder of Bullhorn Software, a company with 150 employees and $25 million in revenue, said the top issue in Rhode Island is “jobs, jobs, jobs.”
“The two biggest complaints I hear on the campaign trail are first of all, I can’t find a job myself or I’m stuck in a dead end job,” he told Newsmax. “America used to be the place if you worked hard you could get ahead because you could be rewarded with a better job. Unfortunately that better job is not here today in Rhode Island and the reason it isn’t is because we keep electing career politicians.
“That’s the operative word here. Career politicians that are favoring the same failed policies, the same anti-business policies. Sheldon Whitehouse has never met a business he doesn’t want to tax and he doesn’t want to over-regulate. That’s the problem and that’s why jobs and the economy are number one here in Rhode Island today.”
Hinckley said it is time to start over on taxes, explaining the tax code is broken and ineffective and past the point where tinkering will help.
“Sheldon Whitehouse, who I’m running against, has proposed new measures to further complicate our present tax code,” he said. “We need to start over. We need a fair, simpler tax code that makes April 15 just another day and in fact is pro-family and pro-business. The only way to put America at the top of the pile again internationally is to make and create a tax code that attracts capital to our shores instead of driving it away that attracts jobs to our shores instead of driving them away."

Hinckley noted that Obamacare, recently upheld by the Supreme Court, will place yet another burden on people and businesses.
“I’ve talked to small business owners here in Rhode Island over the past 15 months and we have first-hand evidence from these employers that their cost of health insurance has already risen between 10 and 25 percent because of the cost of implementing and the mandates in Obamacare” he said. “That cost on business will kill jobs and again, further destroy our economy here in Rhode Island and America. This thing is a train wreck waiting to happen. Furthermore, it’s going to put additional burdens on the states with the expansion of Medicaid which will then drive up taxes at the state level. This is a giant mess waiting to happen at the state and the national level.”
Hinckley argued that the lack of leadership has contributed to Rhode Island coming in last in a CNBC survey of the best states to do business in, a dubious distinction that Rhode Island has held two years running.
“We’ve been electing career politicians decade on, decade off and that’s what you got,” he said. “You got a horrible business environment and an eleven point plus unemployment rate. It’s time to elect people like Barry Hinckley who have created jobs, who have signed paychecks. In fact I’ve signed over 15,000 paychecks. I know what goes into a paycheck. My competitor, career politician Sheldon Whitehouse, he only knows what comes out of your paycheck and the people of Rhode Island know there’s a very big difference.”
