Hillary Clinton has a 10-point lead over Donald Trump in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, an advantage fueled by gains among white women voters, a new poll shows.

The Monmouth University survey released Tuesday, breaks down the support among likely voters this way:

  1. Democrat Clinton: 50 percent
  2. Republican Trump: 40 percent
  3. Libertarian Gary Johnson: 5 percent
  4. Green Part's Jill Stein: 2 percent

In late August, Clinton led Trump by 48 percent to 40 percent, the pollster noted.

The new survey's margin of error is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

"Clinton has been blanketing the Pennsylvania airwaves with ads that highlight Trump's controversial statements, particularly about women," Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement. "They appear to have had an impact."

The poll finds 55 percent of white women voters support Clinton; 35 percent support Trump.

In other findings:

  • 52 percent of voters say Clinton understands them, while 46 percent said she doesn't; 38 percent say Trump understands the concerns of people like them, and 60 percent say he doesn't.
  • 64 percent of voters say Clinton has the right temperament for the job; 31 percent say the same thing about Trump.
  • 4 in 10 likely voters have a favorable view of Clinton; 48 percent don't; 27 percent have a favorable opinion of Trump, and 60 percent have an unfavorable view of him.
