Hillary Clinton during a commencement speech Sunday at Yale University poked fun at herself and at President Donald Trump, the Hill reports.
The 2016 Democratic presidential nominee took out a Russian fur cap with ear flaps called an Ushanka and said, “if you can’t beat them, join them,” in reference to the ongoing Russian investigation into Russian election interference by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Students at Yale traditionally wear over-the-top hats during Class Day.
Clinton, who graduated from Yale Law School in 1973, said she was happy for the graduates including the three “who live in Michigan and didn’t request your absentee ballots in time.”
The former secretary of state lost Michigan to Trump by just over 10,000 votes.
Clinton also used her speech to talk about her loss, telling the crowd she still wasn’t over it.
“I still think about the 2016 election,” she said. “I still regret the mistakes I made. I still think, though, that understanding what happened in such a weird and wild election in American history will help us defend our democracy in the future."
On the polarization in American politics, Clinton implored students to work to uphold American democracy.
“The radicalization of American politics hasn’t been symmetrical,” Clinton said. “There are leaders who blatantly incite people with hateful rhetoric.”
"Waging a war on the rule of law and a free press, de-legitimizing elections, perpetrating shameless corruption, and rejecting the idea that our leaders should be public servants undermines our national unity," she added.
