Hillary Clinton rejected a call by the Methodist church to sanction Israel, saying, “Anti-Semitism has no place in any civilized society—not in America, not in Europe, not anywhere.”
Clinton, a Methodist, made the comments in a letter about the B.D.S. movement, a campaign that calls for boycott, divestment, and sanctions toward Israel, according to the
New York Times.
The United Methodist General Conference is set to discuss the campaign in Portland, Oregon. Four resolutions at the convention call for the church to divest from companies that it claims profit from Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands, according to
ReligionNews.com.
Jewish leaders from the Israel Action Network and Jewish Federations of North America had asked Clinton for her opinion on the B.D.S. movement’s plans.
The Democratic presidential candidate wrote that she believes the B.D.S. campaign “seeks to punish Israel and dictate how the Israelis and Palestinians should resolve the core issues of their conflict. This is not the path to peace.”
The B.D.S. movement began in 2005, and calls for sanctions against Israel until the country complies with “international law and Palestinian rights,” according to the
BDS Movement website.
The movement has advanced resolutions at other churches, with the Presbyterian Church in 2014 and the United Church of Christ in 2015, according to the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
