Alex Azar: Trump Will Outline Plan to Deal With Opioid Crisis

(Fox News)

President Donald Trump has a comprehensive plan to put an end to the opioid crisis, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told Fox News on Monday.

Speaking just before he was heading out with the president to Manchester, New Hampshire, where Trump will deliver a speech on opioids, Azar said the president is going to lay out "very bold actions and historic goals to stop this crisis dead in its tracks."

Azar said that Trump has a three-point plan in which he's going to "prevent addiction from these legal opioids, he's going to reduce the supply of illicit drugs coming into this country and he's going to ensure that we have great treatment for those who are suffering from addiction from opioids."

One of the key parts to the plan, Azar said is that "We've got to retrain our doctors. Our doctors were trained to deal with pain, but there are alternative ways to deal with pain, including non-opioid treatments," and part of the program is to reduce by one-third the prescription of legal opioids within three years.

He emphasized that "We've got to reduce the number opioid pills that individuals get. Even if it's appropriate for someone to get an opioid prescription for, say, a wisdom tooth or knee surgery, we've got to reduce how many they get."

Azar stressed that "We've got to take back extra drugs that shouldn't be sitting in your medicine cabinet. Get them out of there so your kids or you are not tempted to use them."

When asked about Trump's suggestion that those who deal in opioids be given the death penalty, Azar said that this shows the seriousness in which the administration takes the crisis

"If you're involved in the distribution of illicit drugs, or if you are improperly using, selling, distributing even legal opioids, there should be serious penalties attached, and serious enforcement attached to all of that," Azar said.
