President Donald Trump on Saturday endorsed South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster in Tuesday's five-way Republican primary race, calling him "strong on crime and borders, great for our military and our vets."
"Henry McMaster loves the people of South Carolina and was with me from the beginning," Trump said on Twitter, adding, that he "has my full endorsement."
McMaster, who became governor last year when Nikki Haley was appointed United Nations ambassador, had served as lieutenant governor.
He faces four other challengers: Lt. Gov. Kevin Bryant, former Secretary of State Catherine Templeton, ex-Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill and business executive John Warren.
If no candidate wins 50 percent of the vote Tuesday, the top two finishers will square off in a June runoff.
