Rep. Walberg to Newsmax: Harvard's Gay Lacks Clarity on Genocide

By    |   Tuesday, 12 December 2023 05:17 PM EST

Speaking Tuesday on the House hearings last week over college campus antisemitism, Michigan Republican Rep. Tim Walberg told Newsmax that Harvard's President Claudine Gay lacks moral clarity when it comes to calling out genocide.

It's "interesting" that Gay will keep her seat as president, Walberg told "American Agenda," because "she has problems in other ways, too, about her veracity for veritas, going back to her days in her doctoral program.

"But I think it evidences when she's incapable of a moral clarity to simply say, Yes, that genocide, in language or other otherwise, is wrong, and it will not be accepted at a distinguished institution like Harvard.'"

"But I guess there's enough of a foundation there — endowments — that they can slide through for a while."

According to University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer, the definition for genocide is "rather narrow."

During an appearance on the Lex Fridman podcast, Mearsheimer tells Lex, "I have a rather narrow definition of what a genocide is. And I don't think there are many cases that qualify as a genocide. The Holocaust certainly does, OK?"

"Now, what Hamas did doesn't even come close to what happened to European Jewry between, let's say, 1939 and 1945."

"What Hamas did pales in comparison. It's hard to believe anybody would make that argument, right? Yes, a lot of Jews died, but hardly any compared to the number that died at the hands of the Germans.

"I mean, [there's] just no parallel at all. And furthermore, Hamas was in no position to kill all the Jews in the Middle East. Just not gonna happen."

According to a report from Haaretz, after Oct. 7, roughly 1,200 Israeli Jews died with nearly 2,000 injured.
