Long before he ran for president, Donald Trump expressed support for some gun rights limitations, and Capitol Hill Democrats are hoping that in the wake of the Las Vegas mass shooting they can persuade them to work with him on enacting new gun measures.

Ninety-six House Democrats, led by Rep. Mike Thompson, have written a letter to the president imploring him to come to their side. Thompson leads the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.

"You have the power to make real change in America and protect our communities from the senseless gun violence like we saw in Las Vegas," the letter says. "Together, we can find common ground that respects and supports the 2nd Amendment while keeping guns out of the hands of people who should not have them — criminals and the dangerously mentally ill.

"We are reaching out to you, please: join us in the fight to end gun violence," the letter reads.

Similar overtures have come from the upper chamber. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., made a speech from the Senate floor in which he said, that before Trump ran for office as a Republican, he "was for certain sane, rational, limited aspects of gun control."

Following the Sandy Hook shooting, Trump called for tougher gun laws, Schumer noted, but accused the president of moving to the right during the campaign because of "the power of the NRA [and] the money of the NRA."

Schumer said he hopes Trump "can have a bit of a reawakening because of the horror of what happened" Sunday in Las Vegas where 58 concertgoers were shot to death.
