Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, predicted that the answer for whether Republicans will hold onto control of the House and Senate in 2018 will be known "in the next 60 days" when they successfully pass tax reform.
"We will know who will win the November 2018 election in the next 60 days when the House and Senate pass tax reform and President [Donald] Trump signs the bill," Norquist wrote in an opinion piece in the Washington Examiner on Friday.
"Done. Over. Game called," he continued. "The fate of the tax reform bill is the fate of the modern Republican Congress."
A win with passing tax reform would "bring economic growth, millions of new jobs, higher incomes, and a great increase in national wealth as the stock market climbs yet higher," Norquist explained. This, he maintained would herald "optimism" and help to overcome the economic "grumpiness" experienced during former President Barack Obama's tenure.
Passing tax reform would also showcase the division between Republican and Democratic lawmakers and would demonstrate that "the House, Senate, and president can and did work together to defeat the Washington special interests to create tax reform and tax reduction," he wrote.
Though Trump and Republicans have already worked together on important legislation, the bills passed to date were "not the stuff of headlines," Norquist wrote. However, following the GOP's failure to repeal and replace Obamacare, passing tax reform would signal "one big win."
Passing tax reform would show Republicans "delivered growth, income, more time with your family, and demonstrated an ability to be trusted with power," he added.
