Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist Wednesday accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., of "lying" with his claims President Donald Trump's tax plan drops rates for the nation's wealthiest while raising them for working class families.
"There are eight rates now," Norquist told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "They are going to go down to four. The bottom rate is zero. The 10 percent rate goes down to zero. The 15 percent rate goes down to 12. All of the rates come down . . . everybody who pays taxes sees lower rates."
Meanwhile, Norquist said, "the game that Schumer is playing is he pretends there isn't a zero rate. But there is."
The zero rate, he continued, has expanded under Trump's tax plan, and it is "dishonest" for Schumer to make such statements.
"Schumer is not going to play any role in working with the Republicans in Congress or the White House to play any role in tax reform," Norquist said. "I didn't expect him to. But this kind of dishonesty explains that he is not even part of the discussion."
Norquist has said the tax plan would jumpstart the economy while spawning job creation, and Wednesday, he noted the economy's current numbers will "grow by leaps and bounds" under the proposal.
"That's where we're going to see a lot of jobs and a lot of new businesses and the winner of tax reform, the biggest winner is the person who didn't have a job in the last eight years and who gets a job at $25,000 or $30,000 or $45,000 a year," Norquist said.
Critics say the plan will add to the national deficit, but Norquist said the Trump will spark strong economic growth, bringing down the deficit.
"We went to four percent with [President Ronald] Reagan's tax cuts," he said. "These tax cuts as written are as powerful as the Reagan reductions."
