First lady Melania Trump's chief of staff resigned Wednesday after supporters of the president stormed the Capitol to protest what they perceived to be a stolen election.

Stephanie Grisham confirmed to The Hill she submitted her resignation in response to demonstrators getting violent and breaking into the Capitol building.

On her Twitter account Wednesday evening, Grisham tweeted

"It has been an honor to serve the country in the @WhiteHouse. I am very proud to have been a part of @FLOTUS @MELANIATRUMP mission to help children everywhere, & proud of the many accomplishments of this Administration. Signing off now - you can find me at
@OMGrisham Red heart Flag of United States.”

Grisham, who was one of the longest-serving members of the Trump administration, left President Donald Trump's team in April to work exclusively for the first lady.

The resignation comes two weeks before Trump leaves office and Joe Biden is sworn in as president.

Trump and his allies have alleged that voter fraud in several key battleground states resulted in Biden winning the election.

Earlier Wednesday, the president spoke at a rally saying "we will never give up" and urged his supporters to march to the Capitol and make their voices heard. A throng of people then breached the Capitol complex and disrupted Congress's certification of the Electoral College vote.

A joint session of Congress met around 1 p.m. ET to certify the electoral votes from the November election. Each body had returned to its respective chamber to discuss objections raised to Arizona's electoral votes when protesters forced a lockdown of the building.

The first lady had not publicly commented on the protests and violence at the Capitol.

Grisham previously served as the first lady's communications director and White House press secretary. She worked for Trump's campaign in 2015 and started at the White House as a deputy to then-press secretary Sean Spicer.
