Grimes to McConnell: 'I Don't Scare Easy'

By    |   Friday, 26 July 2013 02:38 PM EDT

Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is unloading on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in a new online video ad, accusing him of being "petty and small" in his approach to politics and hurting the state and country with many of his votes.

"We'll have this debate, senator, and as you've probably already seen, I don't scare easy," Grimes says in the video, in which she tells voters that she plans to officially kick off her Democratic campaign on July 30, aimed at stopping McConnell's re-election.

Story continues below video.

The Republican Senate leader is ahead in the polls and is also facing a primary challenge from tea party candidate Matt Bevin, Politico reports.

"Sen. McConnell is the biggest part of the problem," Grimes continues in her video message, referring to the gridlocked Congress. "He's wasted decades blocking legislation that would have helped Kentucky and our country. And over the last few years, he's done it for the worst possible reason: spite."

Grimes insisted she does not always agree with President Barack Obama, "but that doesn’t mean we can't put the good of our people ahead of the bad that comes from acting petty and small."

Grimes goes on to slam McConnell's votes, saying she plans to hold him "accountable" in the campaign "for voting to double Medicare premiums on Kentucky's seniors, including our retired coal miners."

She also criticized him "for being against requiring the Department of Defense to buy equipment that's made in America first" and "for failing to stand up for women when you voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and the Violence Against Women Act."

She didn't stop there, however. She also jumped on the five-term senator for "opposing raising the minimum wage over and over again while you became a multimillionaire in public office."

McConnell's campaign did not immediately respond to Grimes' charges. But the Republican has made it clear in the past that he intends to run a hard campaign of his own.
