President Trump — no fan of the mainstream media — will go to the annual Gridiron Club Dinner next month, but he has not decided whether to attend the glitzier the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, it was reported Monday.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a statement confirming Trump's plans to go the Gridiron Club Dinner on March 3. She said the president has not made up his mind about attending the White House Correspondents' Dinner, which is usually filled with celebrities, as well top government officials.
"Several people have inquired about the President's participation in Gridiron and WHCA dinner — the president is planning to attend the gridiron dinner, but no decision has been made regarding the WHCA dinner at this time," Sanders said in a statement. "Will keep you posted when there is an update."
Trump, who has had hostile skirmishes with most of the press since taking office — branding many reports "Fake News" — skipped both dinners last year.
In a tweet last year, he said: "I will not be attending the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!"
The WHCA typically invites the president, members of his staff and usually brings in a comedian to roast the president. The president then usually issues a light-hearted rebuttal.
Trump attended the dinner in 2011, only to be ribbed by then-President Barack Obama.
