Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer faces renewed attacks from Republicans both in and out of the state over new restrictions on schools, restaurants, and other businesses, The Hill reports.
Whitmer previously had a series of restrictions, including bans on indoor services and in-person classes for students in high school and college, struck down by the Michigan Supreme Court. However, the government reissued the orders through the state's Department of Health and Human Services, which now faces a lawsuit from the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association.
Dr. Scott Atlas, President Donald Trump’s chief coronavirus adviser, ripped Whitmer for the restrictions, tweeting: “The only way this stops is if people rise up. You get what you accept.”
He later said that he was not trying to incite violence against the governor, who nearly faced a kidnapping plot that was thwarted by the FBI last month.
Michigan state Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, a Republican, said in an interview with Bridge Michigan that although he “vigorously and vehemently disagree[s] with many of the actions our governor has taken over these last few months,” he will not push for Whitmer’s impeachment, which some in his party have called for.
