President Donald Trump is right to turn the screws on Congress by threatening to shut down the government if he does not get the funding for his U.S.-Mexico border wall, former Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"This is a great strategy," DeLay told Tuesday's "America Talks Live." "I am a great believer in fighting the good fight and being aggressive in trying to get things done."

Trump vowed again Tuesday to shut down the federal government in September if the Democrats do not give him $25 billion for his wall, declaring on Twitter: "I don't care what the political ramifications are . . .

"Our immigration laws and border security have been a complete and total disaster for decades — and there is no way that the Democrats will allow it to be fixed without a government shutdown."

The threat is a solid move with a history of success, DeLay told hosts Miranda Khan, John Cardillo, and Gina Loudon.

"Back in 1995 when we took over the majority for the first time in 60 years we had a big shutdown because we had cut spending, we have eliminated a hundred programs, and Bill Clinton vetoed the bill, shut down the government," he said.

"It was the best thing to happen to the country, and it was the best thing that happened to Republicans, because from that we sent the message to Bill Clinton: honor our commitments to the American people. And from that we got welfare reform, a balanced budget, surplus in the government.

"And Bill Clinton did not get to sign one bill that he initiated for the next six years. It does work. It is a great tactic, and I'm so glad he's doing it now because this is going to nationalize the election … give our people an opportunity to fight the Democrats on the national level."

DeLay is the author of "Revival! Revolution! Rebirth!: A Radical Call from the Former Majority Leader of the United States House of Representatives," written with Wallace Henley and published by WND Books.
