The GOP-backed Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC sent Democratic voters in Pennsylvania a mailer thanking their candidate in the upcoming special election for supporting "our Second Amendment rights," The Washington Post reports.
The crafty move targets liberal-leaners who might be single-issue voters on guns in the super-tight March 13 special election in the wake of the Florida school massacre two weeks ago.
The special election, pitting Democrat Conor Lamb against Republican candidate Rick Saccone, is to fill the House seat vacated by disgraced Republican Tim Murphy, who resigned in October after a sex scandal.
Lamb deviates from the Democratic Party on gun restrictions, supporting stricter background checks but not much else.
"Our job to make sure voters in Pennsylvania's 18th district know where Conor Lamb stands on important issues of the day," Courtney Alexander, a spokeswoman for the CLF, told the Post. "This mailer was sent to voters who might find his views on the Second Amendment of note."
Republican voters in the district, however, are getting a very different message from CLF advertisements — Lamb and Democrats want to take your guns away.
Saccone is endorsed by the NRA.
RealClearPolitics is rating the election a "toss-up," though the most recent Gravis poll showed Saccone with a 6-point lead over Lamb.
