A new poll published Thursday by CNN and conducted by SSRS, showed 74% of Americans disapprove of the way GOP leaders in Congress are handling their job.
The survey comes a day after a narrow majority of Republicans nominated Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., as their next House speaker after the unprecedented ouster of the former speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
Tensions are still running high among Republicans and the House is at a standstill amid bitter infighting after McCarthy's stunning removal last week. The House was gaveled into a brief session, Thursday, then closed, with next steps uncertain.
A poll released Wednesday by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 25% of Republicans say they approve of the decision by a small group of Republicans to remove McCarthy as speaker, while 3 in 10 Republicans said it was a mistake.
The SSRS poll, which was conducted among 1,255 U.S. adults Oct. 4-9 and has a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points, also found:
- 50% said they supported removing McCarthy from his post while 49% opposed it.
- 30% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say his ousting was a good thing for the party and 34% said it was a bad thing.
- Still, 54% of Americans said they have more confidence in congressional Republicans than in Biden to “tackle the major issues facing the country.”
