National Review Editor Rich Lowry said Democrats "rolled" Congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump with the $1 trillion spending deal crafted this week.
"There really would have had to be a willingness to go to the mat on this to see it go into a government shutdown, and there was no will to do that on the part of Capitol Hill, and Trump basically went along with that desire of Republicans," Lowry said on Fox News' "Freedom Watch" with Judge Andrew Napolitano.
Fox News contributor and columnist Charles Krauthammer made the same statement Monday night.
"Trump got rolled," Krauthammer said. "The Republicans got rolled. They ended up with nothing, really. It's sort of embarrassing."
Republicans made many concessions in striking the deal, which allows Congress to avoid a government shutdown. Trump himself removed a request for funding for a border wall along the U.S.-Mexican border.
"He apparently cared that people on Capitol Hill cared," Lowry said of Trump's reluctance of a shutdown. "Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan just didn't want to shut down – they thought it would be a symbol of Republican dysfunction when you have the White House and both chambers."
