There was apparently some awkwardness at the Senate GOP's weekly lunch on Tuesday when President Donald Trump, who attended the meeting to discuss policy with his colleagues, had to join the buffet line like everyone else.

Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said on "The Remnant Podcast with Jonah Goldberg" there was not a lot of staff in the Mansfield Room of the U.S. Capitol.

"There's no pampering, so there's a buffet line," Sasse said. "I think nobody really thought of the awkwardness of nobody having planned to get a plate of food for the president.

"All the rest of us were there before the president was there just to show respect for when he arrived. And when he got there and was shown to his seat at the head table, there was no food and someone had to elbow him and say, 'There's the buffet line over there.'"

Sasse said Trump concluded he wouldn't have time to eat lunch anyway because he began speaking to the group shortly after.

"That was kind of funny, as the president got up and had to try to find his way through the buffet line and ultimately decided it probably wasn't worth trying to eat since he was gonna be called to the podium soon," said Sasse, who noted that Trump spoke for nearly an hour about a variety of topics.
