GOP Dominates in Governorships, State Legislatures

By    |   Tuesday, 11 November 2014 10:15 AM EST

The GOP's midterm congressional wins are not its only gains as now Republicans control two-thirds of all state legislatures and 31 governorships, The Washington Post reports.

While "state legislatures aren't the sexiest things in the world … as a means for demonstrating a national wave, they're about as pure an indicator as you get," wrote The Fix's Aaron Blake in a post-election column published by the Post on Tuesday.

"That's because they're the lowest-profile office [i.e., people vote the party more than anything] that is pretty uniform across the country. And as of today, the GOP is dominating in an unprecedented way," Blake noted.

Republicans' big gains in governor's races — winning 26 of 36 state elections — took a backseat to hard-fought Senate battles, which captured airways and headlines, US News & World Report noted.

Republicans who finished strong included governors Rick Snyder in Michigan, John Kasich in Ohio, Larry Hogan in Maryland and Charlie Baker in Massachusetts, US News reported, while Democrats found a lone "bright spot" in Tom Wolf, who knocked off incumbent Tom Corbett in Pennsylvania.

The midterm successes portend a difficult but not impossible path to the presidency for Republicans who must also be warned that Democrat's waning coalition in 2014 could also be rebuilt by 2016, The New York Times noted.

Bright spots in the midterms, the Times noted, were "demographic trends have not doomed Republicans to minority party status." GOP candidates did well in Hispanic-majority counties that typically had voted Democrats, the paper said.
