Gizzi on Politics: Miller Time, Handel’s Hope, Perry Encore

By    |   Thursday, 21 March 2013 04:19 PM EDT

With the news last week that Republican Rep. Don Young of Alaska was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for failure to properly disclose expenses and travel costs, speculation is mounting that Joe Miller, the 2010 GOP Senate nominee and FOSP (Friend of Sarah Palin), could mount a primary challenge against the 41-year incumbent.

Miller, a Yale Law School graduate and Desert Storm veteran, made headlines three years ago by defeating incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary. But Murkowski mobilized backers and went on to win in the general election through a write-in campaign — only the third senator in U.S. history to win on write-ins.

Miller has since become a popular fixture among Alaskan tea-partiers and libertarians and has been mulling over whether to take on Young, an old enemy of Palin, or to run against Democratic Sen. Mark Begich in 2014.

Handel Eyes Georgia House Run

One Georgia Republican watching closely to see if conservative Rep. Tom Price ends up running for the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss is Karen Handel, former secretary of state and losing primary candidate for governor of the Peach State in 2010.

A former top official at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund, Handel had reportedly been considering a Senate race herself. But with four sitting U.S. House members seriously eyeing the primary, she is now considered more likely to run for an open House seat — if and when Price decides to try for the Senate.

When she ran for governor three years ago, Handel had the backing of Sarah Palin but lost a tight race against Rep. Nathan Deal in a Republican primary run-off.

Perry Considering Presidential Bid

A year after his once-promising bid for the Republican presidential nomination crashed and burned, Texas Gov. Rick Perry got a hero’s welcome at last weekend’s Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C.

Hitting hard on issues ranging from illegal immigration to the right to keep and bear arms, Perry told reporters he will decide whether to seek re-election to the office he has held longer than any governor of the Lone Star State “sometime this summer,” and later, whether to make another run for president in 2016.

Biden, Pelosi Upset Fellow Catholics at Pope Mass

As both have in the past, Vice President Joe Biden and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi upset many fellow Roman Catholics on Tuesday by presenting themselves for Holy Communion in spite of their pro-abortion stand that clashes with the doctrine of their faith.

But their doing so was particularly newsworthy this time because Biden and Pelosi presented themselves at the Mass at the Vatican during the installation of Pope Francis.

As archbishop of Buenos Aires, Francis became known for refusing to serve Holy Communion to any Catholic politician who supported abortion.
