Gingrich Calls for Regime Change in Iran

Wednesday, 23 November 2011 07:38 AM EST

WASHINGTON— Newt Gingrich called for replacing the leadership of Iran during Tuesday's televised debated, saying it could be done within a year -- a more aggressive posture toward the U.S. nemesis that even his own party, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The eight candidates differed sharply on a wide range of topics on national security and foreign diplomacy.

Several candidates Tuesday called for tough measures against an Iran.
Texas Gob. Rick Perry called for sanctioning the Iranian central bank. Businessman  Herman Cain said he would support Israel in attacking Iran if there was a 'credible plan.'  Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has called for isolating the Iranian regime through sanctions, cooperation with Israel and a stronger aircraft carrier presence in the region.

Gingrich went further, saying that the U.S. should bomb Iran's facilities to prevent it from becoming a nuclear power "as a last recourse, and only as a step toward replacing the regime."

He also said that "if we were serious, we could break the Iranian regime" within a year starting with "cutting off the gasoline supply to Iran and then, frankly, sabotaging the only refinery they have."
