Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain will participate in a "modified Lincoln-Douglas debate,"
National Review Online reports.
The event, hosted by the Texas Tea Party Patriots, will be held Nov. 5 in Houston. Bill O'Sullivan, treasurer of the organization, called the previous GOP debates "superficial" and "frustrating."
At the recent debate in Las Vegas, Gingrich stated that if he's the nominee he'd like to challenge President Barack Obama to a series of forums using the three-hour Lincoln-Douglas format. He repeated his intention at an Iowa Faith & Freedom Coalition event.
In 1858 Abraham Lincoln lost to Stephen Douglas in a race for a U.S. Senate seat in Illinois. He defeated Douglas and others to win the 1860 presidential election.
The Gingrich-Cain debate will focus on major entitlements — Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
A Gingrich source said the former speaker of the House plans “in a friendly way” to illustrate his policy differences with Cain.
