Gingrey to Announce Georgia Senate Bid

Gingrey to Announce Georgia Senate Bid
U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga.

U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey is expected to announce his bid for Senate on Wednesday becoming the second Republican to throw his hat into the ring to replace retiring Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

The six-term lawmaker will face Rep. Paul Broun who announced his candidacy last month.

The two are doctors and fiercely oppose President Obama's health care proposals. They were also among the 10 House Republicans who voted against the GOP budget blueprint last week.

Gingrey, 70, is expected to mark the launch of his campaign with kickoff events in Atlanta and Augusta. Campaign sources say Gingrey will have a war chest to wage a strong campaign with a robust media presence.

Other opponents expected to jump in the race include Reps. Jack Kingston and Tom Price.

Rep. John Barrow looks to be the only potential Democratic candidate, the Washington Post says, but he has not said whether he will run.

Gingrey recently found himself in the middle of a controversy when he seemed to defend Republican Todd Akin who argued that "legitimate rape" rarely causes pregnancy. He later insisted that his position was "misconstrued."
