NATO has been "a great success" to America and its allies — and President-elect Donald Trump should meet with European leaders "to assure that the United States will stand by its allies and keep its word," former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell said Tuesday.

"NATO has been a great success critical to the United States and our allies have stood with us," Mitchell, 83, who represented Maine and served as Senate Democratic leader from 1989 to 1995, told Brooke Baldwin on CNN. "When Russia violated the law on Ukraine, the U.S. sent sanctions on them.

"The Europeans stood with us, though they were hurt by the sanctions in a way that we weren't," he said.

European Union leaders have grown wary of Trump in light of his stinging comments on issues ranging from NATO to German cars to the crumbling of the EU itself.

In addition, Russian President Vladimir Putin also has accused the Obama administration of trying to undermine Trump by spreading "fake" allegations.

In easing tensions with Europe, Mitchell told Baldwin that Trump "has plenty of time to deal with this.

"Most presidents are remembered for what they do in office, not what they say before they take office.

"I hope he convenes a meeting of European leaders to assure them that the United States will stand by its allies and keeps its word."

Should the U.S. act against Putin, the Kremlin leader "needs to know if he militarily attacks them, they are our allies and partners in NATO."

Mitchell's new book is "A Path to Peace: A Brief History of Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations and a Way Forward in the Middle East" with Alon Sachar.

"Stability in the Middle East is important to the United States as the dominant power and to the people in the region and to the preservation of Israel's security," he said.

Mitchell also referenced a January 2008 speech by former President George W. Bush in Jerusalem calling for a two-state solution in the region.

"He said: 'Israel you have a very successful state. You don't have security. The only way you're going to get it is if the Palestinians get their state. The only way you're going to get it is if Israel has security.'

"In other words, each of them has an interest in both succeeding."
