Geithner Once Wanted Hillary Clinton for Treasury Secretary

Friday, 15 June 2012 10:50 AM EDT

While speculation continues over whether Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will make another run for the White House, it turns out she was also a candidate for the post of Treasury Secretary. Last year Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was looking to quit and he was promoting Clinton as his replacement, The Washington Post reported.

Geithner wanted to step down to spend more time with his family, which was moving to New York for his son’s senior year of high school. He hit on Clinton as his perfect replacement because she would easily receive Senate confirmation and understood the debt crisis here and abroad.

While there was some concern that shifting Clinton over to Treasury would revive squabbling over staffing that had come up when she first went to State, the biggest road block turned out to be Obama wanting Geithner to stay put, the Post reported.
