Gov. Newsom to Spend Millions Boosting Abortion Measure

By    |   Monday, 10 October 2022 01:42 PM EDT

California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom is spending millions on a new ad campaign calling on voters to support Proposition 1, which would add abortion and contraceptive protections to the California Constitution.

Newsom's $2.5 million ad campaign will be rolled out over the next two weeks, just before the midterm elections take place in November. It comes as part of a larger $5 million TV ad campaign and follows a billboard campaign in red states that promoted abortion access in California.

"The idea that we are proactively codifying statute — that we are going on the offense — is something from my perspective to celebrate and to highlight and not just dial-in and take for granted," Newsom said in an interview with Politico.

The news outlet notes that the measure holds strong ratings in recent polls, but Newsom says that the ads are necessary to keep attention on the issue.

"The better we do on this, the more intensity, the more we dial it up, I also think it sends a message that reverberates across our borders," the governor said. "If a significant majority come out and vote for Prop. 1, it sends a message to states that didn't do anything this year — Why didn't you? Where were you? — and to take this moment seriously and get ahead of the next round of Supreme Court decisions.

"Let's dust off any timidity here and apathy and take seriously the world we're living in."
