Poll: Romney Better Than Obama on Economy

By    |   Wednesday, 25 July 2012 12:29 PM EDT

Republican Mitt Romney holds double-digit leads over President Barack Obama when it comes to who Americans trust to fix the economy, deal with the deficit, and create more jobs, a new poll finds.

The Gallup/USA Today poll indicates 55 percent think Romney is better equipped to deal with the federal budget deficit, compared to 36 percent for Obama. On the economy, 51 percent go for Romney, while 41 percent opt for Obama. And 50 percent think the former Massachusetts governor could create more jobs, compared to 44 percent for the White House incumbent.

Obama fares better on likeability quotients. Sixty percent say he is likable, compared to just 30 percent for Romney. While 50 percent believe Obama understands the problems they face in their daily lives, only 39 percent said that of Romney.

But Romney scored higher on one important personal characteristic, with some 46 percent saying he can get things done, compared to 41 percent for Obama.

The poll was conducted July 19-22.
