Donald Trump faces opposition both from within the establishment and the conservative wings of the GOP, but a new Gallup Daily Tracking poll shows the presidential front-runner maintaining a mostly positive rating among Republicans as a whole.

Trump's favorables among the party for March were 55 percent while his unfavorables were 44 percent. Those numbers have been fairly consistent since July, less than a month after Trump announced his candidacy.

Trump began the race with a 54/37 percent favorable/unfavorable rating, and his favorables peaked at 61 percent in January. Forty-one percent is his highest unfavorable, and has been at that level since February.

The relatively steady numbers show that Republicans were familiar with Trump and had already locked in their views of him early in the contest, Gallup said in reporting the results.

Trump's numbers are comparable to 2012 nominee Mitt Romney's at the same time. Romney was 59 percent favorable and 31 percent unfavorable. But previous election years showed GOP voters far more favorable of the eventual nominee.

John McCain in 2008, George W. Bush in 2000 and Bob Dole in 1996 all saw favorable ratings among Republicans in a range of 80 percent to 90 percent, Gallup reported.

Trump's favorables are better with men, older voters, those without college degrees and the less religious. His unfavorables are higher with women, younger voters and college graduates.

The survey talked to random GOP voters from July to March across the country. The margin of error was plus-or-minus 3 percent.
