President Donald Trump's approval rating dropped four points last week amid a controversy at America's southern border.

After Trump's Gallup approval number reached 45 percent during the week of June 11-17, it plummeted to 41 percent during the week of June 18-24.

Key findings in the weekly Gallup survey:

  • Trump's approval is at 41 percent, above his presidency average of 39 percent.
  • Trump's approval among Republicans is 87 percent, down from 90 percent the previous two weeks.
  • Trump's approval among Democrats is 5 percent, half of what it was the previous week.
  • Independents gave Trump a 38 percent approval rating, a four-point drop from the previous week.

Trump's rating jumped to 45 percent during the week of the June 12 nuclear summit he held with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore. Gallup hypothesized the latest drop is likely due to the border crisis, which involved separating families who illegally entered the United States from Mexico. Trump ended the practice last week, but adults who opt to illegally cross the border — rather than go through an official port of entry — will still be charged criminally.
