First lady Melania Trump’s favorability rating remains steady in the latest Gallup poll, though her unfavorable rating went up by seven points since last month, when she delivered a speech at the Republican National Convention.
- Favorable: 47%
- Unfavorable: 43%
Gallup’s April poll showed her favorability rating at 47% as well, with 36% unfavorable. Melania Trump has kept a low profile in the last few months, partly because of the coronavirus pandemic, a spokesperson told CNN.
Kevin Madden, a former adviser on several Republican presidential campaigns, told CNN that the first lady can have the biggest impact by “rallying base supporters, whether that's through fundraising appeals or get-out-the-vote appeals in the home stretch,” noting that "Every effort to secure the base will be valuable in some of these battleground states that could be close."
Madden also said that the first lady’s popularity may “have a minimal impact on voters” compared to the candidates’ policy decision on the economy, the coronavirus pandemic, and social unrest.
"The broader presidential race is being shaped by very big forces at play, with a pandemic, the economic disruption that has resulted from it and social unrest framing the choice between the two candidates," he said. "As a result, even popular surrogates like the first lady, will have a minimal impact on voters and how they view the choice between candidates."
Gallup polled 1,019 adults from August 31 to September 13, 2020, with a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
