Nearly four in 10 Americans say tariffs slapped on the U.S. by China have hurt the economy while 36 percent believe there has been no effect, according to the latest Gallup poll.

Further, 67 percent say tariffs have had no effect on their own family's financial situation, according to the survey.

The results, according to Gallup:

  • 38 percent say tariffs have hurt the U.S. economy.
  • 36 percent say tariffs have had no effect.
  • 16 percent say tariffs have helped the economy.
  • 17 percent say tariffs have hurt their family's financial situation.
  • 67 percent say tariffs have had no effect on their family.
  • 6 percent say tariffs have helped their family.

More than 70 percent of those polled from each party agree tariffs have had no effect on their family.

The perceived impact on the economy, however, is largely driven by party lines, with Republicans dismissing the negative impact, Democrats apoplectic, and Independents splitting the difference, according to Gallup.

Those results:

  • 42 percent of Republicans think tariffs have had no effect on the U.S. economy.
  • 36 percent of Independents think tariffs have had no effect.
  • 32 percent of Democrats think tariffs have had no effect.
  • 16 percent of Republicans think tariffs have hurt the economy.
  • 39 percent of Independents think tariffs have hurt.
  • 57 percent of Democrats think tariffs have hurt the economy.

"Americans as a whole are skeptical of Trump's prediction that the trade policies will ultimately benefit the U.S., although most Republicans agree with him," Jeffrey Jones wrote in his analysis for Gallup.

Results are based on telephone interviews conducted July 16-22 with a random sample of 1,513 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
