A leading gun-safety group, co-founded by shooting victim and former Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Ariz., is launching ads in 10 competitive House and Senate races against Republican incumbents it claims are aligned with the National Rifle Association, NBC News is reporting.
The organization, called Giffords, is buying $105,000 in digital ads as a "first step" to try to show that gun-safety advocates can punish incumbents, who are linked to the National Rifle Association. The network news attributed the information to Isabelle James, political director for Giffords.
"It's important to us that there is an incumbent in the seat," James said.
The ads will accuse specific lawmakers of being "bought and paid for" by the NRA and will disclose how much money each accepted from the gun-rights group.
In one ad targeting Rep. John Faso, R-N.Y., the narrator asks: "How does he vote?" And the narrator quickly answers: "You guessed it — just like the NRA tells him."
In addition to Faso, the ads will also target Republicans incumbents: Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada and Reps. Mimi Walters and Steve Knight of California, Jason Lewis of Minnesota, Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington, Don Bacon of Nebraska, Mike Coffman of Colorado, Vern Buchanan of Florida, Pete Sessions of Texas and Barbara Comstock of Virginia, according to NBC News.
Gabby Giffords was shot in the head in 2011 during a political rally. She recently solicited donations for her group during massive anti-gun violence demonstrations in Washington, D.C.
