French President Emmanuel Macron took shots at President Donald Trump in a new interview before the two leaders met Thursday in Paris.

Politico cites a French media report in which Macron said the West "has been cracking since the American election" last November.

"The United States expresses doubts about multilateralism, the UN, the WTO, and the climate," Macron said. "The world order of 1945, recomposed after the fall of the Berlin Wall, is now in crisis … In this context, Europe is an absolute necessity."

Macron was elected president in May. He hit back at Trump's decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement by saying he will try to convince Americans they should abide by the accord regardless of how the White House feels about it.

"I will do everything to convince the cities, the states, American entrepreneurs to follow us," Macron said. "Americans will be a part of the Paris agreement, whether the government wants to or not."

Trump accepted Macron's invitation to attend Friday's Bastille Day celebrations in Paris, and the two leaders are scheduled to hold a brief press conference Thursday.
