Ed Meier, a former adviser to Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential race, has entered the race to try to oust Republican Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Tex., the Dallas Morning News reported.

Meier, a Democrat, was a policy adviser to Clinton and had previously worked in the State Department. He now serves as interim executive director of a Dallas education nonprofit called Big Thought, according to the newspaper.

"I'm running for Congress because folks in Dallas deserve a representative who looks out for their needs, not a rubber stamp for Donald Trump," Meier told the paper.

"Pete Sessions stands 100 percent of the time with Donald Trump; I'll focus on what families here in Dallas need — better-paying jobs where people are treated with dignity, more affordable healthcare that they can count on and making sure all of our kids are ready to compete in a changing economy."

The Hill noted Meier announced his campaign with a video playing up his Texas roots.

Meier became the second major candidate to enter the March primary, the Dallas Morning News reported. Former NFL player Colin Allred announced his candidacy last month.

The winner will face Sessions in the November 2018 election.
