Almost half of Florida voters want freshman Sen. Marco Rubio to run for re-election, a new poll shows.
According to the
Miami Herald, the Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey found 49 percent — including 77 percent of Republicans — think the lawmaker, who
ended his presidential primary bid in March after losing his home state to now-presumptive nominee Donald Trump, ought to go for a second term.
"If he decides to do so, he would clearly be the strongest candidate, as none of the current contenders appears to have caught fire with state voters," pollster J. Brad Coker says in a statement, the Herald reports.
More than 40 percent of voters are undecided in the Republican primary — and none of the five top candidates currently in the GOP race have hit 20 percent support, according to the poll.
The survey's margin of error is plus or minus 5 percentage points.
Rubio, who chose not to run for re-election in order to run for president, has resisted calls to
jump into the contest.
But he's got until June 24, the deadline for candidates to qualify for the race, to change his mind, the Herald reports.
