Melania Strikes Back at Mika: You 'Don't Know Me'

Melania Trump and Mika Brzezinski have had an acquaintance for some time. Brzezinski interviewed the first lady in February 2016 when President Donald Trump was running for office.

First Lady Melania Trump Saturday fired her own salvos at MSNBC "Morning Joe" co-anchor Mika Brzezinski after the talk show host implied in an interview that she was "doing the worst job in the country" for the sake of her son, Barron.

"It is sad when people try to further their own agenda by commenting on me and my family, especially when they don't know me," the first lady commented through her press office to The Daily Mail in response to InStyle magazine's exclusive interview with Brzezinski.

Brzezinski's comments to the magazine's website, casting doubts on the stability of the marriage between President Donald Trump and his wife, came on the heels of a pair of tweets Trump posted Thursday claiming that she'd tried to visit him at his Florida Mar-a-Lago resort three times around New Year's Eve, but he'd turned her away because her face was bloodied from a facelift.

"I know Melania," Brzezinski told InStyle after she was asked about the tweets in connection with the first lady's declared agenda against cyberbullying.

"I haven’t talked to her in months, but if my gut is right, I don’t think she’s going to put up with it much longer," said Brzezinski. "I know nothing. That’s just my instinct and I go with my gut and my gut’s always right."

The morning show star continued that she believes "Melania's got the worst job in the country and I don’t think she wants do it a lot longer. I think she will do it for as long as she has to for her son, and that’s it."

Saturday morning, Trump continued his tweet-attacks on Brzezinski and her co-host and fiancé Joe Scarborough, posting that "Crazy Joe Scarborough and dumb as a rock Mika are not bad people, but their low rated show is dominated by their NBC bosses. Too bad!"

On Friday, while Brzezinski and Scarborough were responding to the president's original tweets, she also referred to the first lady, saying that she knows her and likes her. She also commented that on the New Year's Eve in question, she and Scarborough spoke with the first lady and the president in a separate room at the Florida golf estate.

Brzezinski also said Friday that she told the first lady that night about a "chin tweak" she'd received. Scarborough told Vanity Fair that Trump knew Brzezinski didn't get a facelift because he "literally asked 10 times" who did the procedure because he couldn't tell she'd had work done.

"The irony of it all is that Donald kept saying, 'That’s incredible. You can’t even tell? Who did it? Who did it?’ He kept asking for the name of the doctor. He literally asked 10 times. 'Is he down here? Who is he?'" Scarborough said.

The first lady has also spoken extensively with Brzezinski in the past, giving her an interview in February 2016 at Trump Tower to discuss both her own background and her husband's then-presidential campaign.

The Daily Mail also reported that Scarborough and Brzezinski had been on good terms with the Trumps for some time, pointing to a Vanity Fair article about Scarborough and Brzezinski announcing their engagement. In the article, Vanity Fair reported that Trump had offered to officiate their wedding and had offered them the White House or Mar-a-Lago as possible venues.

Scarborough said in the Vanity Fair article that he and Brzezinski visited the White House in late January, just after Trump's inauguration and before their engagement. He said that Trump told them over a lunch with his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, that they should be married at one of the two properties.

"That's when Jared interrupted and said, 'Hey, you know what? I've got my license. I could marry you,'" Scarborough told Vanity Fair, but Trump interrupted and said "Why would you marry them? They could have the president of the United States marry them."

Brzezinski told Vanity Fair that she and Scarborough were not interested in that happening, however.

Meanwhile, in the InStyle interview, Brzezinski said the tweets attacking her and Scarborough marked a "tipping point," and show "we have a leader of the free world who is unhinged. You can’t have someone who is so easily played in such an important and dignified position. He is certainly humiliating the office of the presidency in the eyes of many Americans, and most certainly in the eyes of the world."

Brzezinski said she doesn't "feel hurt by this" but she is concerned for the United States and the "stability of our president."

"My father just died," she said. "My mother has been ill. My daughter lost a good friend recently. I have had a lot of change in my family. I’m worried about my girls. I’m worried about my family. I miss my dad. I have no bandwidth to even slightly be concerned about a tweet from Donald Trump. This is not an issue personally for me."
