Two former U.S. prosecutors say they believe special counsel Robert Mueller is in the early stages of taking action as a result of his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016, CBS News is reporting.

The comments by former Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Myers Wood and her husband, former U.S. Attorney John Wood, followed White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders' insistence that she expected Mueller's probe "to conclude soon," according to the network news.

The former prosecutors were interviewed by CBS News chief White House correspondent Major Garrett and political director Steve Chaggaris on "The Takeout" podcast.

"We are at the beginning," Julie Myers Wood said.

And her husband, John added: "We're at the bottom of the second inning of a long game."

"I don't think the people on Mueller's team would give up the kinds of positions they had unless they believed this investigation was going to go on for some time and really lead somewhere. I think that people at the White House ought to be nervous."

Paul Manafort, the former chairman of Donald Trump's presidential campaign and campaign associate Rick Gates have been charged with multiple counts, including money laundering and conspiracy, USA Today noted. The charges were announced on Monday and relate to their work for a foreign government.

George Papadopoulos, a one-time foreign policy adviser to the campaign, has pleaded guilty to making false statements and "material omissions" to FBI agents, the newspaper reported.

Trump maintains he is not personally under investigation, CBS News said.

But John Wood added: "We don't know if he's being investigated. In terms of whether the president ultimately will have to testify, my guess would be that he will end up testifying in some form."
